As GHID wraps up 2010, we’ve begun to look back on our personal trends and design trademarks incorporated into our completed projects over this past year. From window treatments and paint color, to textiles, manufacturers and inspirations, Garrison Hullinger and associates have continued to generate a soothing style that embodies all that is serene.

Garrison Hullinger and I recently sat down to chat about where we’ve been, what we’re known for, and where we’re headed in 2011. During that time we complied a list of signature statements GHID has used in 2010, and intend on using or reinventing in the year to come. I’m Dreaming…

…of a white Christmas.

Okay, you caught me…yes, I’ve watched “White Christmas” about three or four times already this holiday season, and have every intention of doing so yet again this coming Saturday. I just can’t get enough Bing in my life.

Every Christmas Eve I hope the snow will start falling (yes, maybe so I can break out into “snow…SNow…SNOW” – in all the right harmonies I might add)…so much so that we’re trapped in our little house Christmas day, sipping on wassel, munching on noshes and enjoying a day of naps and doing nothing. However, because I do live in Portland Oregon, my dreams of snow usually turn into a more realistic rainfall – which I’ve come to accept. One day I’ll make it to a snowy climate and wake up to the bright white.

Speaking of white – what about decorating in all white, for the everyday as well as for the holidays? It can be dangerous, but so incredibly beautiful it may be worth the extra care.

Quadrille…

 

The designers at GHID are constantly researching great design of years past, as well as staying up to date on today’s lastest design trends. Even our busy design principal and president of Garrison Hullinger Interior Design, Garrison Hullinger, finds time for this. It’s an important part of our job as well as something we rather enjoy.

Recently our fearless leader ran across a few new fabrics from a line he’s grown quite fond of…

…Quadrille has been featured in nationally recognized magazines numerous times, as well as in large-scale Hollywood productions such as the “Devil Wears Prada”. This line offers a variety of gorgeous fabrics and textiles ranging from beautiful wovens to vibrant and colorful graphics (something they’ve become famous for) to wall-coverings and trims. Some of which have been combined in the most creative and unique ways, all of which we love.

GHID is drawn to linens and cotton-linen blends, and utilize them in just about every project. Here are a few from Quadrille we adore:

All that Glitters…

Gold. What to say other than it’s fabulous…works as a neutral, and wouldn’t you know it, incredibly festive!

What GHID appreciates about this metallic is that it works in small and large doses alike, it goes with pretty much any color scheme and is a fun way to brighten up a space. We often times coincide gold with the holidays, however it can be used for the everyday as well – wall tile, wallpaper, furniture, fabrics and fixtures, leafing, accessories, and framing – it even works with other metallics as seen in a few GHID works below:

Seasonal Decor…

One of my favorite things to do during the holiday season is to help anyone and everyone decorate for the Christmas season…imagine that.

Yesterday, Garrison and I had the opportunity to help one of our clients set-up and decorate her home for her upcoming Christmas party. We moved a few things out, brought a few things in and wall-ahhh; the space looked festive and pulled-together in no time at all.

Our client had both old and new decor to work with; some we used, and others we put back into the boxes. Remember, just because you have it doesn’t mean you have to, or need to display it. Simplify.

Take into consideration your existing accessory elements (the stuff you have out all year-long) when decorating for the holidays, don’t overdo the festive pieces. Work with the decor you have and add your holiday additions to enhance the space.

One more tip we’d like to share (that goes for accessorizing in general), when grouping items it’s nice to place them with similar items that tie them altogether; a unifying element if you will.  For example, a few angel figurines, Santa related items, three small mercury glass votives, so on a so forth.

Remember, height and number are also key when doing this, make sure you have variations of height when placing accessories, and that your collection is a grouping of odd numbers. Odd numbers are more aesthetically pleasing to the eye, and collections in odd numbers work better for mixing and matching all your pieces together to create a more eclectic and balanced look.

While decorating we noticed a few pieces that we feel are classic Christmas decor staples, as well as a few trendy elements that we’d like to share with you. Whether you’re starting your decor from scratch, or want to know what we think are the “must-haves” for the season, allow me to elaborate and share our professional decor advice and opinion…

We love that our client had a bright gold "R" to represent their family name. It works all year-long, however, because of its gold patina it works especially well for Christmas and the holidays.

The additional gold decor around the "R" on the mantle-scape is a nice touch, the light that bounces off the fire creates a beautiful sparkle in the room.

This is a great example of balancing your festive decor with your every-day accessories. The red books work extra well for the Christmas season, however, are left out year round. *Take note of the balance and scale within the bookshelf.

Most everyone has additional ornaments left over, scatter them around the house in glass hurricanes, large bowls or propped up as seen here.

Glass hurricanes, as you can see they can easily transform from Christmas to Thanksgiving/Fall, and used throughout the year.

Topiaries are wonderful additions to any space, this one in particular speaks to the holiday season with greens and reds and depending on size can be placed on either side of a mantle, fireplace, entry, console tables so on a so forth.

Everyone needs a little mistletoe.

I thoroughly enjoy fun and unique stockings, however the classic red and white work just as well.

Garland.

Old-fashioned Christmas lights.

Candles, and sparkling and/or metallic holders.

Good Work II…

Due to the popularity of our last “good work” entry (which by the way, we owe big thanks to all our readers!)…we decided to incorporate a “good work” post on our blog every few weeks or so…Hope you enjoy!

Garrison Hullinger and his team have recently been working with a hip, young couple out of Portland. They adore Ralph Lauren inspired design with touches of old world-ethnic flare. It’s been so fun mixing these various styles together, a challenge we rather enjoy! As the project wraps, we’ll be sure to post a few images of the end result.

We’ve worked alongside this couple to source elegant textiles in blues and creams, unique accessories that speak to their interests and tastes and gorgeous case-goods from around the country. You can’t help but to become a little part of your client’s lives when you work inside their home, and one thing we noticed about this particular couple is their admiration and love for artisan photography; a few of which we have fallen for ourselves.

Cheers…

The more you get to know me, the more you’ll begin to understand my utter fascination and appreciation for music, hence all my song and lyrical references throughout these posts…but, don’t you just want to be there? At Cheers that is, the local pub “where everybody knows your name…”

I don’t know if it’s that I woke up to the oh so familiar sound of rain tapping against my window this morning or if it’s that I’m in a ‘there’s no place like home’ kind of mood; but today, I have this overwhelming sense of appreciation for the city I call home.

I love Portland, it’s not too big, not too small, it’s the kind of perfection even Goldilocks would enjoy. I love the rain, the sunshine we get just three months out of the year, the quaint restaurants, and broad sense of culture…I love that my family lives here and that I have friends in almost every corner of the city. I love that the beach, the desert and the mountains are all just two hours away. I love that when I walk into my coffee-house down the street that they know my name (Cheers!) and that I’ve lived here my whole life and still have yet to experience all that this up and coming city has to offer. I just love Portland.

All those reasons are more than enough to have persuaded even the most skeptical that Portland really does have it all. However, there is one reason I love Portland as much as I do that I didn’t mention above; and that’s the design.

Portland designers have helped put this diverse and hip city on the map. Over the past few years Portlanders have popped up on television shows such as Lifetime’s Project Runway and HGTV’s Design Star (Congrats Gretchen Jones and Emily Henderson). Green design and LEED certifications have been huge for Portland’s design market, and so on and so forth. Today I’d like to share various elements of our city which inspire us at GHID. Rediscover the Beauty of the Neutral…

In the past ten years or so, neutral walls have gone from chic to the furthest thing from unique; nobody wants their house painted in a “builder beige”, or worse yet, stark white. However, allow me to explain, and better yet help you rediscover the beauty of the ‘neutral’.

I agree, the concept of builder beige has been done – but what is builder beige? And why is it so wrong? This seemingly hypothetical color is an overdone, dry and bland tonality that really is only wrong when it’s surrounded by other elements of the same, exact color (i.e. beige walls and an oversized beige sectional, beige pillows, beige lighting so on and so forth), and depending on your climate and the natural light in your geographic region, it can read as lifeless and flat. It’s important to choose color, especially neutrals, based around your climate. All to say that it’s really about choosing the right neutral for your space, as well as working with your surroundings and other elements in your home. Neutrals aren’t just wrong, it’s the way their incorporated into your space that can make them work or not.

The pacific northwest has many a gray days (in case you didn’t notice), so our perfect neutrals have a little rose in them. One of our favorites here at Garrison Hullinger Interior Design is Hazelwood by Benjamin Moore. We also use Devine Color, a specialized brand of paint made specifically with the pacific northwest in mind, not to mention they’re located right here in Portland Oregon. GHID’s designers are drawn to the warm greys, rosy stones as well as rich browns and sandalwood tones.

There are so many gorgeous neutrals to choose from when designing your home, for the paint, furniture and accessories alike. We here at GHID adore a classic neutral palette – and when done right – it can read as fresh, vibrant, soothing and beautiful all at the same time…

Good work…

As many of our fans and followers know, Garrison Hullinger, principal of Garrison Hullinger Interior Design, has recently had the opportunity to travel back east to begin work on a few new projects.  First stop Virginia, “The Mother State”…a few days and short train ride later, Garrison had made it to Philadelphia. In the midst of his busy schedule filled with meetings, sourcing, design appointments and presentations, he managed to make time to gain some design perspective and inspiration and explore the new Urban Outfitters, Free People and Anthropologie facilities…

Located outside Philly’s city center, it was Urban Outfitters that first decided to make the move. Previously located in downtown’s Rittenhouse Square they decided to relocate to the city’s seemingly dilapidated navy yard. How you ask? Where I would respond, MS&R Architects’ and the incredibly talented Urban Outfitters and Co. team. Architect Jeffrey Scherer, founder of MS&R, working alongside Urban Outfitters, managed to transform this 132 year-old decommission ship yard into an idyllic industrial corporate space, perfect for not only Urban, but come to find out, Free People and Anthropologie alike. Nothing says industrial more than an old shipyard…

The ship yard essence and history still lingers, from the rustic wood plank flooring below to the old metal beams above – however, this three-in-one company has made quite a mark on this space – transforming it into one of the more beautifully, creative and well designed office spaces we’ve ever seen. Good work.

The Free People offices are just as gorgeous, textural and unique as their products:

Light fixtures can become accessory pieces when done right – these fixtures remind us of the delicate lace work Free People has become known for.

Rustic floors are rich with texture as well as history, they’re charming and eco-friendly.

Beautiful texture and color brought to you by spools of wool thread located in the design department.

We love that the designers at Free People have chosed to upholster their stainless office chairs in various prints and patterns, utlizing their own fabrics.

If you’re going to use a mouse, why not paint it gold?
